DAEMON Tools Lite: free disc image mounting with burning and file sharing
DAEMON Tools Lite mounts dozens of disc image and virtual hard disk formats, emulates DT, SCSI and IDE virtual drives, and offers free local wireless file transfer to other PCs, Macs and mobile devices, with an ad-supported free version and paid add-ons for advanced features.
DAEMON Tools Lite
DAEMON Tools Lite is a Windows disc imaging utility for mounting, creating, converting and organizing disc images and virtual drives. It mounts all common disc image types, along with VHD containers and ZIP archives, and emulates virtual DT, SCSI and HDD devices. A free edition is available, while paid licenses and add-on modules extend its functionality.
Core functionality
- Mounting and emulation: Mounts disc images, VHDs and ZIP archives and emulates up to four DT, SCSI and HDD devices combined. SCSI and IDE emulation depends on the SPTD driver, which can be installed with the application or separately.
- Image creation and conversion: Creates images from optical discs, data files, folders and Audio CDs, saving them as MDS, MDX or ISO files. Existing images can be edited and saved in these formats.
- Virtual HDD and secure containers: Creates VHD files and works with TrueCrypt containers and VeraCrypt files. A RAM disk can be used as fast temporary storage.
- Disc burning: Burns images, data and audio files to optical media, copies discs on the fly and erases rewritable discs fully or quickly.
- Virtual Burner: Provides a writable virtual device for testing disc projects before burning them to physical media, which reduces wear on drives.
- Bootable USB: Writes bootable operating system images to USB sticks and can protect USB drives with a password.
- iSCSI and network features: Connects to iSCSI targets to use remote images as local ones. Catch shares files between DAEMON Tools apps and mobile devices over a local wireless network without mobile data charges, while browsing and automatic backup of mobile content are paid options.
- Explorer integration: Mounts associated images and archives directly from Windows Explorer and creates images from files, folders and discs.
Editions, licensing and add-ons
The free edition displays advertisements and includes partner offers during installation, with limited support. Paid licenses remove third-party offers. The Personal license includes lifetime updates for three PCs and 24/7 support, while the Commercial license is aimed at businesses and developers and includes lifetime updates and dedicated technical support. Several functions are sold separately, including Virtual Burner, Disc Burn, Bootable USB, iSCSI Initiator, Virtual HDD, Image Editor, Windows Integration and Unlimited Devices. The Unlimited Devices add-on raises device limits to 256 DT drives, 32 SCSI drives, 4 IDE drives and 256 HDD drives. The All-in Features Pack bundles the Pro features at a reduced price, with lifetime updates for three PCs and full support.
- Free License: Basic imaging and mounting features with ads, partner offers and limited support.
- Personal License: Lifetime updates for three PCs, no third-party offers and 24/7 support.
- Commercial License: Lifetime updates and dedicated technical support for business institutions and developers.
Usability and practical applications
The application is organized around a catalog that keeps frequently used images at hand. Typical tasks include mounting disc images for immediate access, creating archival images from optical discs, testing disc projects with the virtual burner and preparing bootable USB drives. Explorer integration and the catalog simplify managing larger image libraries, and the network features allow access to remote images and file transfers between devices on the local network.
Compatibility and installation
DAEMON Tools Lite supports Windows 11 and Windows 10, as well as Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2008. The SPTD driver is offered in 32-bit and 64-bit versions. The free installer presents partner offers during setup, while paid licenses provide an installation without third-party offers and ads.
